Pet Food Recalls

It seems like anymore when you turn on the TV or look on the internet there is a new pet food recall. These can be scary, especially since the largest recall of pet food in 2007, resulted in the death of 100 animals. Since then the FDA, USDA, and other pet food agencies have come together to better regulate pet food ingredients, manufacturing, labeling and distribution. Here is some helpful information regarding pet food recalls.

What is a Pet Food Recall?
"…actions taken to remove a product from the market. Recalls may be conducted on a firm's own initiative, by FDA request, or by FDA order under statutory authority." – FDA website.

Types of Recalls

  • Class I Recall - a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a volatile product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.- FDA website
  • Class II Recall - a situation in which the use of or exposure to a volatile product may cause temporary or medically adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote. – FDA website
  • Class III Recall - a situation in which use of or exposure to a volatile product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences. – FDA website
  • Market Withdrawal - occurs when a product has a minor violation that would not be subject to FDA legal action. The firm removes the product from the market or corrects the violation – FDA website (This is common if the labeling is wrong and cannot be sold as-is.)
