Seems like these are all over the news and social media right now. How to Safely Remove a Tick. Are Ticks in Your Area? These are just some of the headlines I have been seeing. Is it because it is just that time of year? Partly. Is it because the rate of illness has been higher this year? That too is part of the reason.
I think one of the greatest reasons pets are getting more fleas and ticks is that people think that their pets only need protection during the warmer months. Where we live in Western North Carolina, the temperature never really gets cold enough to kill off these pests. And in the last couple of years, we have been having more temperate winters where even less are killed than normally would be.
Let me say this one time so that everyone understands. In our area, flea and tick prevention must be used YEAR ROUND, not just during the warmer months.
There, I said it. So, what type of flea and tick prevention is best? Ah, now that you have some wiggle room to work with. Is it best for your pet to use a pill, a surface application, or something else. That is where your knowledge of your pet and a conversation with a veterinarian would be the thing to do.
